Vape Sticks, Air Puffers and Vape Replacements: A Plain Glossary
Share
This category has a naming problem. The same handful of products are sold under a dozen different words, several of which were invented by marketing teams rather than describing anything real.
If you have been searching and getting confused, this is the decoder.
Key takeaways
- Most of these terms describe two or three actual products wearing different labels
- The words that matter are nicotine, battery and heat. Everything else is packaging
- Some terms are used for both a vape and a non-vape, which is where people get caught
- Ask what it contains and what it does, not what it is called
The terms, decoded
Vape stick / vape sticks. Usually a slim disposable vape. Battery, coil, heated liquid, often nicotine. The word "stick" refers to the shape, not the mechanism, so it tells you nothing useful about contents.
Vape replacement. Deliberately vague. Can mean a nicotine-free vape, a pharmacy nicotine product, or a non-electronic device. This is the term where you most need to ask the two questions below.
Air puffer. Generally a non-electronic device you draw air through, often with a flavour element. Closer in meaning to a flavoured air inhaler than to a vape, though usage varies.
Flavoured air / flavored air. Air carrying flavour, with nothing heated or aerosolised. The US spelling turns up a lot because much of the category's marketing originates there.
Smokeless vape. A contradiction in common use. Vapes do not produce smoke, they produce aerosol, so "smokeless" is describing something every vape already is. It usually signals a nicotine-free vape.
Vape free. Used two ways, which is unhelpful: sometimes it means a product containing no vape components, sometimes it means being free of vaping as a lifestyle claim.
Quit vaping device / vape quitting device. Anything sold to help you stop. Spans pharmacy nicotine products, nicotine-free inhalers and apps.
Natural vape / natural vape alternative. "Natural" is not a regulated term here. It usually means no nicotine, sometimes plant or oil based. Worth asking what is actually in it.
Inhaler vape. A vape marketed as an inhaler. Still a vape if it heats a liquid.
The two questions that cut through all of it
1. Does it contain nicotine? This determines whether it addresses chemical withdrawal or not. In Australia, nicotine vaping products moved into the pharmacy supply chain in 2024, so anything nicotine-based sold from a general retail counter is worth a second look.
2. Does it have a battery, and does it heat anything? If yes, it is a vape mechanically, regardless of the name on the box. Heating means an aerosol, and the ingredient list on the bottle is not the full description of what you inhale.
Everything else is naming.
| If it... | Then it is |
|---|---|
| Heats a liquid with a battery | A vape, whatever it is called |
| Contains nicotine, no heat | Nicotine replacement (pharmacy) |
| No nicotine, no heat, you draw on it | A flavoured air / non-electronic inhaler |
| Is lit and burns | A cigarette, herbal or otherwise |
Why the naming is like this
Two reasons, and neither is sinister.
The category is young. There is no settled vocabulary yet, so sellers invent terms and hope one sticks.
Regulation moves the language. As rules tighten around what can be called what, marketing shifts to adjacent words. "Smokeless", "natural" and "vape free" all do work in that space without committing to a claim.
The practical effect is that the name tells you about the marketing and the spec tells you about the product. Read the second one.
Where our product sits in these words
If you are matching terms to us: Puff Off would be accurately described as a flavoured air inhaler or a non-electronic inhaler. It contains no nicotine, tobacco, THC or CBD, has no battery, coil or heating element, and produces no vapour, smoke or aerosol. Air passes over a food-grade flavour core.
Terms we would not use for it: vape, smokeless vape, natural vape, or anything implying a health benefit. It is not a medicine and we make no health claims for it.
If you want the mechanism explained properly rather than defined in a line, that is in what is a flavoured air inhaler.
FAQ
What is a vape stick?
Usually a slim disposable vape with a battery, coil and heated liquid, often containing nicotine. The term describes the shape rather than the mechanism, so it does not tell you what is inside.
What is an air puffer?
Generally a non-electronic device you draw air through, often carrying a flavour. It is closer to a flavoured air inhaler than to a vape, though the term is used loosely across the category.
Is a smokeless vape different from a normal vape?
Not usually. Vapes produce aerosol rather than smoke, so "smokeless" describes something all vapes already are. In practice the term usually signals a nicotine-free vape, which still has a battery and still heats liquid.
What is the difference between flavoured air and vaping?
Vaping heats a liquid with a battery-powered coil to create an inhalable aerosol. Flavoured air heats nothing, so ordinary air simply carries flavour from a core. No battery, no liquid, no vapour.
How do I tell if a product is really a vape?
Look for a charging port and a liquid or pod. Either means there is a battery heating something, which makes it a vape mechanically no matter what the product is called.
No battery, no coil, no liquid
Whatever the category ends up calling it.
